The Minnesota Twins extended a $23.15 million qualifying offer to Ryan Jeffers on Monday. Jeffers has until 3:00 p.m. CDT on Nov. 17 to decide whether to accept or decline the one-year deal. If he declines and signs elsewhere, the Twins will receive draft pick compensation.
Jeffers was one of eight players to receive a QO this offseason. It marks the Twins' first time extending the offer since right-hander Sonny Gray in 2023.
The QO is a one-year deal that teams can offer to an impending free agent if they spent the entire past season with the team and never received the offer before. For example, Tarik Skubal couldn't receive a QO this year because he spent the past season with two teams. The QO rises in value each year. This year, it is $23.15 million.
Let's take a look at the Twins' complete history with the QO.
Complete Twins history of qualifying offer decisions, signings and departures
2023
The Twins offered Gray a $20.325 million QO after he finished second in American League Cy Young Award voting in 2023. Gray declined the offer and signed a three-year, $75 million contract with the St. Louis Cardinals, who traded Gray to the Boston Red Sox last offseason. Gray is now a free agent. With their compensatory Draft pick, the Twins selected infielder Kyle DeBarge (No. 33 overall), who has been on a tear in this year's Arizona Fall League.
2021
The Twins didn't tag anyone with the QO in 2021, but they signed star shortstop Carlos Correa to a three-year, $105.3 million contract after the Houston Astros extended him the offer. With their compensatory Draft pick from the Twins, the Astros selected right-hander Andrew Taylor (No. 80 overall), who hasn't pitched above Double-A.
Correa exercised his player opt-out after his first season with Minnesota, then re-signed with the organization on a six-year, $200 million contract after agreeing to contracts with the New York Mets and San Francisco Giants but failing physicals with both clubs. The Twins traded Correa to the Astros as part of the 2025 trade deadline fire sale and are still paying roughly one-third of the rest of his contract.
2019
The Twins extended Odorizzi a $17.8 million QO after he posted a 3.51 ERA with 178 strikeouts over 159 innings in 2019. The right-hander accepted it and then made just four starts in the COVID-19-shortened 2020 season due to multiple injuries. He signed with the Astros after the 2020 season.
Minnesota also signed a player who received a QO in 2019, agreeing to a four-year, $92 million deal with former AL MVP Josh Donaldson. The Atlanta Braves extended Donaldson the QO, but forfeited their compensatory draft pick when they signed Marcell Ozuna, who had received a QO from the St. Louis Cardinals. The Twins traded Donaldson to the New York Yankees in March 2022.
2017
The St. Louis Cardinals gave right-hander Lance Lynn a $17.4 million QO in 2017. Lynn declined the offer, which he surely regrets, as the Twins then signed him to a one-year, $12 million deal. The Cardinals selected first baseman Luken Baker (No. 75 overall) with their compensatory pick. Baker reached the majors and is currently playing independent ball. The Twins traded Lynn to the Yankees during the 2018 season after he posted a poor 5.10 ERA in 20 starts with Minnesota.
2014
The Braves tagged right-hander Ervin Santana with a $15.3 million QO in 2014. The Twins then signed the right-hander to a four-year, $55 million contract. Santana was one of the Twins' best pitchers during his four years with the team, posting a 3.68 ERA over 525 1/3 innings.
The Braves selected right-hander Mike Soroka (No. 28 overall) with their compensatory pick. Soroka made the 2019 NL All-Star team as a member of the Braves before multiple injuries hindered his career. The Braves traded Soroka to the Chicago White Sox after the 2023 season. He spent this past season with the Arizona Diamondbacks, recording a 3.41 ERA over 22 outings (21 starts) and is now a free agent.
2013
The Seattle Mariners tagged first baseman Kendrys Morales with a $14.1 million QO in 2013. He declined it and then remained a free agent until the Twins signed him to a prorated $12 million deal in June. The Twins traded Morales to the Mariners in July. Seattle didn't receive a compensatory pick from the Morales signing because they signed Robinson Cano, whom the Yankees extended the offer to.
