Houston Astros infielder Carlos Correa will likely miss significant time after suffering a left ankle injury, according to MLB.com's Brian McTaggart. Correa could be sidelined for weeks or even months while he recovers. The former Twins shortstop hurt his ankle while taking swings in the batting cage before the Astros' 2-1 win against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Daikin Park in Houston on Tuesday. He is set to see a foot specialist on Wednesday morning.

Correa's injury reminds Twins fans of how their favorite team re-signed the 2017 World Series champion in 2023. After a strong 2022 season in which he posted 5.3 bWAR and a .291/.366/.467 (138 OPS+) slash line with Minnesota, Correa opted out of his three-year deal with the Twins. Correa agreed to a 13-year, $350 million deal with the San Francisco Giants in Dec. 2022, but it fell through due to concerns about his physical. The New York Mets then agreed to sign Correa to a 12-year, $315 million contract, which also fell through due to concerns about his medical reports. The Giants and Mets were reportedly worried about Correa's right ankle, which was surgically repaired in 2014. Because of New York and San Francisco's concerns with Correa's ankle, the Twins were able to re-sign him to a six-year, $200 million deal that can max out at $270 million over 10 seasons.

While Correa is slated to miss time because of an injury to his left ankle, and the Twins were able to re-sign the infielder due to the Mets and Giants' concerns over his right ankle, the infielder's recent injury still brings back the memory of when Minnesota surprisingly brought him back.

Correa's brutal injury is huge blow for struggling Astros

With Jeremy Peña being the Astros' starting shortstop over the past several years, Correa became the Astros' starting third baseman after the Twins traded him to his original team. However, Peña played in just 10 games this season before suffering a right hamstring strain, forcing Correa to move back to his old position. On the bright side for Houston, Peña could begin a rehab assignment this weekend, according to The Athletic's Chandler Rome.

Losing Correa is a huge blow for the injury-riddled Astros. In 32 games this season, Correa has posted 1.2 bWAR and a solid .279/.369/.418 (119 OPS+) slash line with three homers, eight doubles and 16 RBI over 141 plate appearances. Despite Correa's strong start to the season, the Astros have the second-worst record in the American League (15-22).
