Reality is beginning to settle for the Minnesota Twins as the MLB trade deadline is one week from Thursday. While the Twins are in the middle of the crowded American League Wild-Card picture, conventional wisdom would suggest that Minnesota will be sellers at the deadline.

There was confirmation earlier this week that the Twins are telling teams they are ready to move their rental players; however, a larger question remains. The question is in the form of All-Star starting pitcher Joe Ryan, and if the Twins will be willing to move him, considering the need for starting pitching among contenders.

Twins fans might be shocked by who’s vulnerable at the deadline

  • Joe Ryan

Nothing in how the Twins' front office has operated over the last year would suggest a trade of Joe Ryan is likely before the deadline, but this is a unique market. There isn't a clear ace available ahead of the trade market, and that could lead to teams making a desperate offer to the Twins for Ryan. If that happens, the Twins would be foolish not to listen, and moving Ryan could land several core pieces for the seasons ahead. In The Athletic's final trade deadline big board, Ryan was the top trade chip mentioned.

  • Christian Vázquez

A glance over Christian Vázquez's slash line would suggest that he isn't a feasible option for teams in need of catching help ahead of the deadline. However, a veteran with postseason experience, Vázquez could latch on with a contender because of his framing skills. The Twins quietly added catching depth earlier this week, suggesting they could be preparing to lose a catcher off their Major League roster.

  • Louis Varland

If the Twins are considering moving Jhoan Duran and Griffin Jax at the deadline, chances are Louis Varland is also generating trade buzz. With an ERA of 2.14 through 49 appearances this season, Varland, with a fastball approaching triple digits, would be an ideal target for teams in need of bullpen help before August 1.

  • Kody Clemens

Kody Clemens has been a pleasant surprise for the Twins this season, hitting 12 home runs with a 120 wRC+. Considering his ability to play all over the field, Clemens would be an ideal target for teams looking to bolster their bench ahead of the deadline.
