Edgar Martinez

Edgar Martinez was a key component of a nucleus that helped save baseball in Seattle. With rumors that the team would find its way to Tampa Bay, Martinez was one of the Mariners’ leaders that would help them capture their first two division titles in 1995 and 1996 and be a part of the 2001 Mariners that won an MLB-record 116 games.

Mixing in his accomplishments as a seven-time All-Star, five-time Silver Slugger Award winner and two-time American League batting champion, Martinez goes down as one of the greatest designated hitters in MLB history. But he also had a penchant for turning it up against the Twins.

Martinez would play just under a full season against the Twins in his career and the results would be lopsided in the slugger’s favor. In 141 games against Minnesota, Martinez would slash .339/.427/.587 and record a 1.014 OPS with 30 HR and 95 RBI.

Those numbers would exceed Martinez’s average season of .312/.418/.515 with 24 HR and 99 RBI. While a lot of those numbers came against the pitiful Twins teams of the 90s, there was no doubt that Martinez loved it when Minnesota showed up on the schedule.
