Minnesota Twins Daily Dip, August 14th, 2017

News and Notes

Minnesota Twins 6, Detroit Tigers 4

The Twins hit big home runs early and Byron Buxton provided the game-clinching RBIs in the 8th as the Twins took the series finale with the Tigers on Sunday. Ervin Santana started the game, going 5 innings, allowing 4 runs (2 earned) on 7 hits and 2 walks, striking out 6. Trevor Hildenberger earned his first save with 1 1/3 scoreless relief innings, allowing 1 hit and striking out 3. Brian Dozier led off the game with a home run and had a single. Miguel Sano hit a home run. Eddie Rosario had a pair of singles and a walk. Byron Buxton had a single, walk, and a stolen base. Ehire Adrianza had a single and a walk. Chris Gimenez had a pair of walks.

August 14th Probable Starter: Bartolo Colon vs. Cleveland, 7:10PM CT

Rochester Red Wings 4, Norfolk Tides 3

Rochester responded to Norfolk putting up 2 runs in the 4th by putting up 3 over the 5th and 6th innings to take the victory. Tim Melville went 6 2/3 innings, allowing 3 runs on 4 hits and 3 walks, striking out 6. Niko Goodrum had a home run. Anthony Recker and Engelb Vielma each had a double.

August 14th Probable Starter: Off day

Birmingham Barons 7, Chattanooga Lookouts 4

The Barons were able to strike on Lookouts pitching really for the first time in the series as the Lookouts lost the series finale. Felix Jorge made the start, going 4 2/3 innings, allowing 4 runs (2 earned) on 5 hits and 3 walks, striking out 6. Nick Gordon had a double, single, and two walks. Carlos Paulino had a pair of singles and a walk. Edgar Corcino had a pair of singles. Alex Perez had a pair of walks. LaMonte Wade had a single and a walk. Max Murphy had a double.

August 14th Probable Starter: Fernando Romero @ Birmingham, 7:05PM CT

Fort Myers Miracle 11, Dunedin Blue Jays 7

The Miracle dominated the Blue Jays on Sunday, with a 5-run Blue Jay 9th inning making the score appear better than it was. Brady Anderson went 5 innings, allowing a run on 4 hits and a walk, striking out 1. Tanner English had a pair of doubles and a pair of singles. Zander Wiel had a triple, a double, a single, and a walk. Brandon Lopez had three walks. Jermaine Palacios and Nelson Molina each had a pair of singles. Brent Rooker had a double.

August 14th Probable Starter: Lewis Thorpe vs. Lakeland, 6:05PM CT

Cedar Rapids Kernels 7, Quad Cities River Bandits 6

In a crazy game highlighted by big innings, the Kernels had the final big inning, scoring 4 in the bottom of the 9th to defeat the River Bandits in a walk off. Charlie Barnes had a rough start, going 3 innings, allowing 6 runs on 7 hits and 2 walks, striking out 1. Evan Sanders went 3 scoreless, hitless innings, allowing 2 walks, striking out 1. Patrick McGuff went 3 scoreless innings, allowing a hit and a walk, striking out 1. Caleb Hamilton had a single and two walks. Shane Carrier had a double and a single. Trey Cabbage had a pair of walks. Lewin Diaz had a single and a hit by pitch. Aaron Whitefield had a home run.

Johnson City scored in the first, but everything else went the Twins way on Sunday in a blowout win. Melvi Acosta went 7 innings, allowing a run on 6 hits and 2 walks. Jovani Moran had 2 scoreless relief innings, allowing 2 hits and striking out 5. Andrew Bechtold had a pair of doubles and a walk. Mark Contreras had a home run and a double. Kolton Kendrick had a double and a single. Matt Albanese had a pair of singles. Wander Javier had a pair of walks.

Eddie Rosario’s 2-3 day on Sunday brought his August stats up to .356/.388/.756/1.143 with 5 home runs and 12 RBI. Of those players who have played at least 10 August games, that ranks Rosario 11th in all of baseball in OPS (Giancarlo Stanton has a 1.442 OPS to lead), 22nd in batting average (Tim Beckham is hitting .491 on the month to lead baseball), and 9th in slugging percentage (Giancarlo Stanton is leading on the month with 1.022).
