One Last Thing

In 2004 on this day, the Twins played a marathon game against the Oakland Athletics, going 18 innings, though remarkably, the game was over in under 5 hours. Mark Mulder and Carlos Silva had an excellent battle, with Mulder going 8 innings and Silva going 7. Justin Duchscherer went 4 1/3 innings of scoreless relief and Chris Hammond went 3 innings of scoreless relief to get the win for the Athletics.

Joe Roa was the star in relief for the Twins that day, going 5 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just a hit and no walks, striking out 3. Cristian Guzman and Justin Morneau each had three hits, including a home run apiece, with Morneau’s coming in the bottom of the 18th inning as the Twins attempted to rally after giving up 3 runs in the top of the 18th but lost the game when they could only manage the two runs of Morneau’s blast in the bottom half of the inning.
