By Brennen Rupp
The Minnesota Twins are fresh of winning two straight against the St. Louis Cardinals, the best team in baseball. They will look to make it three in a row tonight against the Chicago Cubs tonight at Target Field. The Twins and Cubs weekend series will kick off tonight.
The Twins are currently 36-30 and 3.5 games back of the first place Kansas City Royals in the American League Central. The Cubs are 35-29 and seven games back of the first place Cardinals in the NL Central.
Three Players to Watch
- Phil Hughes will get the ball for the first game of the series. He’ll be making his first career start against the Cubs. Hughes has back-to-back quality starts. He’s 4-6 on the season with a 4.76 earned run average. Last season Hughes gave up just 16 home runs in 209.2 innings pitched. This season through 82.2 pitches he’s given up 15 home runs.
- Joe Mauer hit a game-tying home run in yesterday’s win over the Cardinals. Mauer has struggled mightily at the plate since the calendar flipped to May. Mauer is hitting just .183 this month and the Twins are hoping his home run yesterday will get him turned around.
- Byron Buxton has gotten off to a slow start at the plate. He’s hitting just .125 with six strikeouts through his first five big league games. He’ll be looking to pick up his first at Target Field this weekend.
