Jamey Carroll had a decent MLB playing career. One of those guys that will always be stuck in the back of baseball fans’ minds, but we never really remember why. Minnesota Twins fans might remember him because he was a member of the Twins for almost two seasons.

It came to light that Carroll had retired as a player on Monday. Carroll will be heading to the Pittsburgh Pirates as a special assistant to baseball operations, according to SB Nation’s Chris Cotillo.

A special assistant to baseball operations sounds like the utility man of the front office, something that Carroll knows a thing or two about. Carroll appeared in 638 games at second base, 316 at third base and 264 at short. In fact, Carroll had playing time at every position on the diamond except for first base and catcher.

Yes, Carroll had a pitching outing and it came as a member of the Minnesota Twins. August 5, 2013 was when Carroll toed the rubber, the Twins were down 13-0 to the Texas Rangers when Carroll came in and shut the door. It was a three up, three down inning. Carroll only need to throw nine pitches to get out of the inning, seven of those were strikes.

Carroll logged 12 years of MLB experience. He started his career with the Montreal Expos/Washington Nationals before going to the Colorado Rockies, Cleveland Indians, Los Angeles Dodgers, Twins and Kansas City Royals.

Despite being in the league 12 years, Carroll only made the World Series once. Carroll was part of the 2006 Rockies that lost to the Boston Red Sox.

Carroll appeared in 197 games for the Twins in just under two seasons with Minnesota. In his time in Minnesota, Carroll hit .257/.327/.301 with 49 RBI and one home run.

Have a wonderful post-playing career, Jamey Carroll. We’ll never forget that pitching performance. Seriously, it’s on your Wikipedia page. We won’t forget.
