Manny Being Manny

Jeff Manship made his starting debut last night, going 5 innings, giving up 1 ER (a homer to Alexi Ramirez) while walking two and striking out two. Let’s start out with some pitch speed, shall we?

As you can see, Manny loves him some off-speed stuff. Out of his 80 pitches, over a quarter of them (23) were changeups. His changeup has roughly a 6-7 MPH difference from his fastball. He threw 18 of them for strikes, but only got 1 swinging strike, so perhaps it is just a change of pace pitch.

Next, let’s see where in the zone he worked:

Lots of good stuff here. Manship kept his pitches down in the zone and had some good sink, and as a result really kept the Sox off balance. Manship has certainly earned himself another turn in the rotation, and with the emergence of him and Brian Duensing, Glen Perkins has to be feeling worried.
