Minnesota Twins Week In Review July 10th-16th

It’s been a busy week around the Minnesota Twins organization! Let’s check in at every level…

Minnesota Twins

Record: 1-2 @ Astros, 46-45, 2nd in AL Central, 1.5 games back in division, 1.5 game back from 2nd wild card
Best hitter: Brian Dozier .385/.429/.923/1.352, 3 R, 2B, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 1/5 BB/K
Best pitcher: Ervin Santana 6 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 5 BB, 3 K, 52 game score
Worst hitter: Jason Castro .000/.250/.000/.250, 2/5 BB/K
Worst pitcher: Jose Berrios 1 2/3 IP, 4 H, 7 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 1 K
Notes: The Twins came out of All-Star break with a tough series against the Astros, and the bats and starters all struggled, seemingly. One not mentioned here that was impressive was the performance of Taylor Rogers on Saturday in 1 1/3 innings of relief really not letting the Astros’ powerful lineup even touch his stuff.

Rochester Red Wings

Record: 2-2, 51-41, 3rd in International League North, 7.5 games back in division, 5 games back in wild card
Best hitter: J.B. Shuck .273/.385/.364/.748, 2 R, 2B, 2/3 BB/K, SB
Best pitcher: Dillon Gee 7 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K
Worst hitter: Tommy Field .063/.118/.125/.243, 2B, RBI, 1/4 BB/K
Worst pitcher: Bartolo Colon 3 2/3 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 5 K
Notes: The AAA All-Star game was during the week, so the Red Wings had just one series against one of the most loaded teams in the minor leagues in Lehigh Valley, who shut down the hitting quite a bit, making picking a “best hitter” guy tough.

Chattanooga Lookouts

Record: 5-2, 19-5 in second half, 61-33 overall, 1st in Southern League North
Best hitter: Jonathan Rodriguez .379/.438/.655/1.093, 6 R, 5 2B, HR, 4 RBI, 3/9 BB/K
Best pitcher: Fernando Romero 2 GS, 10 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 4 BB, 11 K
Worst hitter: Levi Michael .111/.111/.111/.222, R, 0/5 BB/K
Worst pitcher: Ryan Eades 2 G, 5 1/3 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 6 K
Notes: The Lookouts had a great week of pitching throughout their staff, making picking a bad pitcher a rough choice as Eades really had two solid long relief appearances. The team has taken over the overall top record in the Southern League and continue to play well behind the strength of their pitching staff. Rodriguez gets the nod for the second straight week.

Fort Myers Miracle

Record: 5-1, 17-5 in second half, 50-40 overall, 1st in Florida State League South
Best hitter: Sean Miller .563/.563/.875/1.438, 4 R, 2 2B, HR, 2 RBI, 0/3 BB/K
Best pitcher: Sean Poppen 2 GS, 14 1/3 IP, 10 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 9 K
Worst hitter: Kevin Garcia .000/.100/.000/.100, 1/1 BB/K
Worst pitcher: Alex Robinson 2 G, 3 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 6 K
Notes: The Miracle had a very good week all around, with multiple hitters posting over a 1.000 OPS and finding a bad pitcher being quite difficult. The Miracle have moved themselves into a pretty secure spot right now in the playoff hunt for the second half.

Cedar Rapids Kernels

Record: 1-5, 11-14 second half, 50-45 overall, 5th in division, 6.5 games back
Best hitter: Trey Cabbage .250/.250/.375/.625, 2 2B, 0/5 BB/K
Best pitcher: Griffin Jax 7 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 2 K
Worst hitter: Joe Cronin, .000/.050/.000/.050, R, 1/10 BB/K
Worst pitcher: Max Cordy 2 G, 2 IP, 4 R, 3 ER, 3 H, 2 BB, K
Notes: The Kernels had a rough week offensively, not only losing, but scoring a total of 2 runs in their 5 losses on the week. The pitching was actually quite good in those same games, giving up no more than 3 runs in the losing streak. The hitting was terrible, hence, having a hitter with a .625 OPS as the best hitter on the week.

Elizabethton Twins

Record: 3-3, 15-9 overall, 2nd in division, 0.5 games back
Best hitter: Andrew Bechtold .429/.692/.857/1.549, 3 R, HR, 2 RBI, 6/2 BB/K
Best pitcher: Charlie Barnes 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 5 K
Worst hitter: T.J. Dixon .000/.300/.000/.300, R, 2/0 BB/K
Worst pitcher: Huascar Ynoa 2 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 5 BB, 2 K
Notes: Elizabethton’s offense performed well, but the pitching struggled to hold down their foes, as they allowed 30 runs on the week. The offense did put up 42 runs of their own, spread across many of their hitters who had tremendous weeks.

GCL Twins

Record: 2-4, 12-7 overall, 1st in division
Best hitter: Ben Rodriguez .500/.591/.833/1.424, 4 R, 3 2B, HR, 8 RBI, 2/2 BB/K
Best pitcher: Carlos Suniaga 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K
Worst hitter: Jean Carlos Arias .154/.214/.154/.368, R, 0/3 BB/K
Worst pitcher: Jordan Balazovic 3 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 1 K
Notes: Rodriguez has been tremendous in the last week and really overall as a hitter as a 38th round draft pick, which makes it easy to cheer for him. The pitchers really threw well, but the team simply couldn’t push across timely runs in spite of scoring well.

DSL Twins

Record: 1-4, 25-11 overall, 2nd in division, 0.5 games back
Best hitter: Juan Martinez .545/.615/.818/1.434, R, 3 2B, 3 RBI, 2/1 BB/K
Best pitcher: Osiris German 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
Worst hitter: Francisco Martinez .100/.100/.100/.200, 0/4 BB/K
Worst pitcher: Elvis Rivas 1 2/3 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 3 K
Notes: The DSL Twins went through their first losing streak this week, with the losses on the week being quite lopsided and the one win being a tight 3-1 victory.
