Hot Twins Action: Sam Deduno

Mar 19, 2013; San Francisco, CA, USA; Dominican Republic starting pitcher Samuel Deduno (21) pitches the ball against Puerto Rico during the first inning of the World Baseball Classic championship at AT

If you missed the game last night, the Dominicans won the 2013 World Baseball Classic Championship by shutting out Puerto Rico 3-2. You can take a look at the full box score, but worth noting if you’re a Twins fan is Sam Deduno‘s line: 5 innings, 5 strike outs, 2 hits, 3 walks and, well, a pair of wild pitches. But when he was on, he was on. This video is in Japanese, but you don’t need to know the difference between Sadaharu Oh and Spaghetti O’s to see he went through a stretch where he just straight up made the Puerto Ricans look plain silly:

Sure, the only thing he’s really consistent at is walking too many batters, but if you’re still not convinced Deduno deserves to be in the mix heading north come April 1 with Scott Diamond likely heading to the DL for a few weeks, let me refresh your memory:

I don’t think he really knew where that pitch was going to end up, either, but there’s no denying that was some nasty gravy.
