Redmond Signs With Tribe

Former Twins backup catcher Mike Redmond has caught on with the Cleveland Indians. Redmond is going to be the Indians backup, presumably behind Lou Marson. The Indians traded Kelly Shoppach to the Rays in the offseason.

Redmond had good success for a backup catcher with the Twins. His defensive skills eroded at the end, and he didn’t possess a ton of power. His .341 wOBA with the Twins in 2006 was the 2nd highest of his career.

But, Red Dog did have good batting averages (.311, .341, .294 and .287 in his first 4 years with the team) and was best known for the way he would dump the ball into right field. He also came up with the “smell ’em” phrase, which may or may not have been the coolest thing ever.

Redmond might not have a ton left to offer as a player, but he’s going to make a great manager some day, and he’s a great guy. God speed, Red.
