When you’re a fan of a team that’s hunting for a playoff spot, you look forward to October. When you’re a fan of a team that’s fighting to avoid the worst record in the American League, you look forward to September.

No, unfortunately, there isn’t a special September playoff series for bad teams. We look forward to September because that’s when Major League active rosters expand, thus allowing the Twins (and the other 29 MLB squads) to bring some of their prospects up to play in the Big Leagues. Contenders might be afraid to use too many young, untested players with so much on the line, but bad teams usually take this opportunity to audition some of their future stars.

Yesterday, Cody Christie wrote that Aaron Hicks and Oswaldo Arcia have played well enough at AA New Britain to earn a call-up next month. He also brought up an important point, that Hicks might be left behind, since he is not on the Twins’ 40 man roster. That inspired this writer to take a look at all of the players who areon the 40 man roster and think about which players we might see this fall.

Some caveats for this discussion. First, New Britain is likely to make it to the Eastern League playoffs, and AAA Rochester is just four games behind in the International League wild card race. If those teams make the playoffs, the Twins are not likely to call up their players until it’s over. Both leagues conclude regular season play in early September and then conduct two best-of-five series to determine a winner, so the playoffs could last until mid-September. Second, while my assessments are primarily based on player performance, the Twins could be thinking of other factors in making their call-up decisions, such as accumulation of service time or effect on player development. Finally, of the 14 players on the 40 man roster who aren’t currently with the Twins, two (Matt Capps and Anthony Swarzak) are injured Major Leaguers. That leaves us with 12 players to consider.

Pitchers

Deolis Guerra, Carlos Gutierrez, Pedro Hernandez, Liam Hendriks, Lester Oliveros, Kyle Waldrop

To be honest, there aren’t a lot of exciting names on this list.

Waldrop has logged four innings with the Twins so far in 2012, so it’s likely he’ll return in September at some point. It’s doubtful that any of the other relievers will come to Minnesota. Guerra looked like he had finally turned around his career early in this season, but since a promotion to AAA, he’s had an ugly 5.40 ERA and 1.42 WHIP. Gutierrez has been sidelined since shoulder surgery in mid-July, so he’s not an option. Oliveros was pitching well at Rochester until late July, but he too had a run-in with a surgeon, and he’s out for the season.

As for the starters, Hendriks has been devastating to International League hitters, accumulating a 9-2 record and 1.99 ERA so far. He has not had nearly as much success in the Big Leagues this year, but given the hodge-podge nature of the Twins’ starting rotation, he’s probably going to get another shot in the Majors in September, if not before then. Last year he was with the Twins in September, and he earned a 6.17 ERA in four starts. Hernandez, the pitcher acquired in the Francisco Liriano trade, has made two starts for Rochester, one good and one not-so-good. Unless the Twins are worried about his workload for some reason, there’s probably no reason not to bring him up.

Infielders

Eduardo Escobar, Tsuyoshi Nishioka, Chris Parmelee

Parmelee is almost 100% guaranteed to be back with the Twins in September. This summer, Parmelee seems to have dedicated himself to trying to make the people who sent him to the minors feel stupid. He has a .360/.471/.703 AAA slash line, which is even better than the .355/.443/.592 he hit for the Twins last September. The only thing that could prevent Parmelee from being a September call-up is if the Twins feel the need to bring him up before then.

Escobar, the other leg of the Liriano deal, is another likely September Twin. He was already playing in MLB for Chicago prior to the trade, albeit as a bench player.

Nishioka is a tougher call. If the fans made this call, it’s pretty obvious that Nishioka would not be back. And even from an objective point of view, it seems like he has burned the last bridge back to the Major Leagues. But the Twins are known for trying to squeeze every dime’s worth of value out of their players, so we cannot completely rule him out as a possibility.

Outfielders

Arcia, Joe Benson, Rene Tosoni

My personal opinion is that Arcia will join the Twins as soon as New Britain’s postseason is done. I do not base this on any inside information or even strong logic; I just get the sense that his AA performance is too good to ignore. The Twins should let him have a few at bats against Major League pitching so that they have a better idea how soon he’ll be able to handle Minnesota’s right field spot.

Benson reached MLB last September, but his career has taken a big step back since. Assigned to AAA at the beginning of the year, Benson hit just .179 there, got demoted to AA, then broke his hand. He’s back from the injury, but he still hasn’t broken the Mendoza Line for New Britain. It’s hard to argue that Benson has earned a call-up this year or that facing MLB pitchers again would be good for his confidence.

Tosoni was never as highly-rates as Benson as a prospect, but his 2012 has been eerily similar: assigned to AAA, demoted, injured, and slumping. Unless the Twins develop a big need for outfield depth, he probably won’t return this year.

Last night the Twins started the 2013 re-build by trading Francisco Liriano to the White Sox for prospects Pedro Hernandez and Eduardo Escobar.

Liriano’s struggles and resurgence have been well chronicled. He had a 10 great start run after being re-inserted into the starting rotation in May. An impressive 2.84 ERA plus 25 K’s in his last 2 starts in the run had the fan-base hopeful for a resurgent Liriano going forward or a decent trade haul at the deadline. After giving up 7 runs in 2.2 innings to the White Sox, Liriano’s value statement had been made. Liriano is a pither with a 3-10 record a 5.31/4.22 ERA/FIP. He has an impressive 9.81 K/9 but a very high 4.95 BB/9.

For a time, I had visions of potential high end starters for 2013. Not the top 50 propsects in baseball, but guys like Dellin Betances, Carlos Martinez and Garrett Richards danced through my head. All potential middle of the rotation starters that could help the tattered Twins pitching staff in 2013. A staff with an ace of Scott Diamond needs all the help it can get.

Well, the Twins traded for lefty pitcher Hernandez and infielder Escobar instead. Both are only 23, both have already made their major debuts and add inventory in positions of need in the Twins system. The problem is, they are not very high impact prospects.

With a rotation that will include Scott Diamond, Nick Blackburn and a host of mediocre prospects, unknowns, has-beens and never-wheres fighting for a starting spot, Hernandez could very well be in the mix next year. Problem is, Hernandez doesn’t strike out many guys but at least he doesn’t walk many. He’s a true Minnesota Twin pitcher. He has decent numbers in the minors (10-3, 3.49 ERA between A, AA & AAA in 2011), but if he and Escobar had been in the system last year, I would have ranked him #36. He’ll probably move up a few spots this year, but he looks like a #5 or bullpen arm.

Escobar was ranked by various services anywhere from 7th to 10th in Chicago’s system after 2011. A great defensive player with no bat (Twins have never had one of those), I’d have ranked him #29. Since the White Sox system is generally considered one of, if not, the worst in all of baseball, it shouldn’t shock anyone that Escobar would rank much lower in Minnesota’s system. With uncertainty at shortstop and second base for the immediate future, Escobar could help the Twins a little bit.

The Twins had an asset in Liriano with a little more than $2 million owed the rest of 2012. A guy worth no more to any team than a couple guys that wouldn’t even top 25 in the Twins system. The Twins are so desperate for pitching, that they traded their 2nd best pitcher this season and the one with the most upside away for these two guys.

Fangraphs says Liriano has been worth $4.9 million so far this season or around $7.5 million if extrapolated over the full season. Once the season ended, the Twins could have received a 1st round compensation pick if they had offered a qualifying offer of $12.4 million and Liriano signed somewhere else.

So, the decision the Twins had was complicated:

1. Offer Liriano a one year deal for 35% more than he’s been worth in 2012?

2. Hope he signs elsewhere?

3. Accept him signing back?

4. Offer an extension for 2 to 3 years at say $8 million and not offer the qualifier?

5. Get something now because no offer was coming?

The Twins chose #5 and as much as I don’t love the trade, they have given themselves some depth and some potential and saved $2 million. The problem is, it doesn’t improve the Twins much in 2013 or the future.

What he does from here on out doesn’t matter much, it’s what he would have done the rest of the year and 2013 that is important.

Check out Nate’s thoughts on the trade

You’ve probably heard by now that Francisco Liriano is no longer a Twin. He is a White Sock. In return, The Chi Sox sent two 23 year old AAA prospects – Eduardo Escobar and Pedro Hernandez – to the Twins.

If you’re like me, your first reaction was to groan and gnash your teeth. Actually, your first reaction was to look up Escobar and Hernandez, because you’ve never heard of them. But the groaning followed soon after when you realize that Escobar cannot get on base and Hernandez is another projected 5th starter who loves to Pitch to Contact. I really wanted to see the Twins land a power pitcher whose name begins with D so that he could join Sam Deduno, Scott Diamond, Brian Duensing, and Cole DeVries in baseball’s first All D rotation, but after some thought, I have to admit that this is probalby the best Terry Ryan could do in the situation.

When you think about it, Liriano was not that attractive a commodity on the trade market. He’s 3-10 this year, and he owns a 5.31 ERA. We’ve heard a lot about the 10 good starts he made this summer, but everyone not connected to the Twins is probably more familiar with the 24 bad ones he made last year, when he was 9-10 with a 5.09 ERA. Even this year, Liriano has been beaten up by the Yankees, Rays, Orioles, and Angels (three times) – exactly the teams an AL contender will need to try to beat at some point. Another contender, the same Chicago team that acquired him yesterday, annihilated him earlier in the week for seven runs, including three homers. Finally, Liriano is a free agent in about two months, and due to the new collective bargaining agreement, his new team gets zero draft compensation if he signs elsewhere. That may not deter a team from paying to acquire a former Cy Young like Zack Greinke, but it doesn’t do anything to drive up the price for a time bomb like Liriano.

Basically, any General Manager who parted with a good prospect to acquire Liriano would have faced a mob of pitchfork-toting fans screaming for blood. Ryan did well to get even these two marginal prospects in return for Liriano. And hey, who knows? One of them might turn out to be a secret star. Hernandez, at least, has some potential. According to this scouting report that was written when Hernandez was traded for Carlos Quentin last year, Hernandez has a pretty good changeup with “legitimate plus potential.” If the change can become an out pitch, he could be more than just a fifth starter. If the Twins’ coaches could somehow help turn his slider into an MLB-caliber pitch, even better.

One thing strikes me as strange about this trade, though. Just two weeks ago, Ryan gave us a glimpse of his trade deadline battle plan, saying “You can go get a marginal Triple-A guy who might be here next year… are you going to be satisfied passing up a high-ceiling guy? I wouldn’t be.” Basically, he said he’d rather go after prospects in the low minors who have some upside than acquire a boring prospect whose close to the Majors. But then he went ahead and grabbed two players who fit the second category. Perhaps Ryan sees more potential in these players than the rest of us do?

Finally, I’d like to address the people who argue that Liriano should not have been traded by stating categorically that Ryan had no choice. The Twins would have gained absolutely nothing by giving Liriano 12 meaningless starts in a wasted season. And he was worth nothing to them in terms of draft compensation, because in order to get compensatory picks, the Twins would have had to offer him a $12 million contract, which Liriano would have accepted (thus voiding the picks), because no other team would be stupid enough to offer him $12 million to play in 2013. According to Fangraphs’ player valuation calculations, there has been only one season (2010) since 2006 in which Liriano was worth more than $12 million. Last year he was worth just $4.6 million.

Some may argue that the Twins should have kept Liriano so they could sign him to a new contract this offseason. Well, to be honest, they still can. If the Twins want Liriano back, they have just as much right to offer him a contract this November as any other team does. If you recall, Minnesota traded Rick Aguilera to the Red Sox in 1995, then quickly reacquired him for the 1996 season.
