The Minnesota Twins have recalled Adalberto Mejia to start on Saturday against the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Minnesota Twins have called up Adalberto Mejia to start Saturday (5/27) against the Rays. Adam Wilk has been designated for assignment. This will be Mejia’s fifth start this season.

Mejia is 1-1 with a 4.96 ERA in four starts. His last start for the Twins went seven innings in the second game of a double-header against the Royals. He gave up three runs but the Twins offense led him to an 8-4 victory.

The first start of the season for Mejia lasted 1.2 innings and his third start lasted only an inning longer (2.2). He does have thirteen strikeouts in 16.1 innings and averages 7.2 strikeouts per nine innings.

Adam Wilk appeared in two games for the Twins after being claimed off of waivers. He pitched seven innings for the Twins giving up three runs and eight hits. He also started once for the Mets giving up five earned runs in 3.2 innings pitched.

The Twins current rotation features Ervin Santana, Hector Santiago, Jose Berrios, and Kyle Gibson. Phil Hughes is currently on the disabled list so the rotation needed a fifth starter. Mejia is the most logical option as he is one of the more consistent starters in Triple-A.

With the addition of Jose Berrios to the rotation the Twins have three solid starters. The struggle has been to find solid pitching at the back of their rotation. Phil Hughes has been blessed with solid run support, but Kyle Gibson hasn’t been the same pitcher he was in 2015.

Today the Twins will look to rebound after a tough loss Friday to the Rays. Santiago was out-dueled by Chris Archer who had eleven strikeouts. Adalberto Mejia may not be able to provide eleven strikeouts Saturday but a quality start would go a long way.
