The Minnesota Twins blanked the Orioles 3-0 this afternoon

More from Puckett's Pond

The Minnesota Twins improved to 4-1 in the spring with a shutout win today over the Baltimore Orioles. Phil Hughes had the start for the club at CenturyLink Sports Complex.

Hughes was very effective and the O’s, Ubaldo Jiminez too was sharp. Both went 3 innings. The pitchers had control of the game until the 5th inning when John Hicks knocked in Oswaldo Arcia, who had just stolen 2nd. The Twins added another run in the 6th with an RBI double from Trevor Plouffe. Juan Centeno continued his hot spring with an RBI double of his own in the 8th.

The O’s, however, were unable to get anything going against the Twins. Trevor May, Randy Rosario, Fernando Abad, Ryan Pressly and Brandon Kintzler all put up zeroes behind Hughes.

The Orioles mounted their biggest threat in the 9th with two runners on base but Kintzler’s defence stepped up with a double play to end the game.

. Oswaldo Arcia. OFFENSE . C+. The Twins’ hitters had seven hits, 3 walks, struck out 6 times and were 2/11 with runners in scoring position. They did a good job getting on base but were poised to do more damage. A bunch of guys had solid days at the plate but no one player stuck out very much. We’ll give the special mention to Oswaldo Arcia for walking all three times he went to the plate, scored a run and stole a base.

The pitchers were excellent for the Twins. They allowed just 6 hits, 1 walk and struck out 5. Hughes and May both deserve the special mention here. Hughes allowed one hit and nothing else over three innings. May allowed a walk and a hit over 2.1 innings. We’ll give the edge to May since the hit he allowed was a weakly hit infield single and for also putting up three strikeouts. . . Trevor May. PITCHING . A

B. The Twins turned three double plays on the afternoon and didn’t make an error. We’ll give special mention to the double play combo of Engelb Vielma and Wilfredo Tovar.  . . Engelb Vielma and Wilfredo Tovar. DEFENSE
