Joe Mauer was just becoming Joe Mauer again. In his last 19 games Mauer had a .320 batting average and 13 RBI. He was back, until an RBI double in last night’s ballgame made the hometown boy leave the ballgame. That pulled oblique has now put Joe Mauer on the 15-Day disabled list.
Mauer had said the oblique had been bothering him for a while, but the swing on Tuesday night really aggravated it.
As a whole, Mauer’s numbers were back on the rise after a brutal start to the 2014 campaign. Mauer currently sits at a .271/.342/.353 line with 28 RBI and two home runs. The trip to the DL effectively puts a dagger in any sort of plan that would have had the rising first baseman somehow sneak onto the roster of the All-Star Game he is the ambassador of.
Taking Mauer’s place on the roster is Chris Colabello. Colabello had an awesome first month with the Twins and then quickly faded off before being sent down to Triple-A Rochester. Colabello’s great month in the bigs still has him in fourth place for the team lead with 30.
In his demotion, Colabello has played in 36 games for the Red Wings hitting .275/.347.473 with 27 RBI and six home runs.
