It’s no secret that Mike Pelfrey has been struggling this season. If you had asked Mike Pelfrey himself he would have said so. After his outing last night, Pelfrey said he was okay, but he came to the park today and he wasn’t so.
The Twins have place Mike Pelfrey on the 15 Day disabled list with a groin injury. In return the Twins will call up shortstop Danny Santana in time for Saturday’s game. In other shortstop news, Twins assistant general manager Rob Antony has said that Eduardo Escobar will now be the team’s primary shortstop.
Danny Santana will be making his major league debut after being in the Twins farm system since 2008. Santana has played 24 games at Triple-A Rochester so far this year with a batting split of .268/.311/.381 and is a switch-hitter. He has seven RBI and four stolen bases on the year.
Santana hasn’t played anywhere in the field other than shortstop this year for Triple-A Rochester. He does have 81 game appearances at second in the minor leagues. Santana also has 25 games in the outfield, 23 of those being in center.
Sam Deduno will being taking Pelfrey’s spot in the rotation. Pelfrey has a 7.99 ERA this season in five starts with a 1.986 WHIP so far this season. The DL stint for Pelfrey will allow the team to get his some rehab starts in an attempt to get the 30-year-old righty right.
