Another Sunday in Twins Territory means another round of cuts to the squad’s Spring Training roster. This week the roster gods sent eight packing to go with the sixteen that were sent away last week. Here’s who and where the new eight went.

Optioned to Triple-A Rochester

Eric Fryer – C

Kris Johnson – P

Danny Santana – SS

Reassigned to Minor League Camp

James Beresford – IF

Sean Gilmartin – P

Darin Mastroianni – OF

Jermaine Mitchell – OF

Brandon Waring – IF

This round of cuts resulted again in no surprises, but we still learned/solidified a couple of things:

  • Despite Pedro Florimon still not playing in a spring game, Santana will not make a miracle run to grab the Opening Day job. Florimon isn’t far away, but Eduardo Escobar is probably the leader in the clubhouse with Jason Bartlett struggling.
  • Eric Fryer is not going to win the backup catcher job. The Twins are down to Kurt Suzuki, Chris Herrmann and Josmil Pinto on the spring roster. In an ideal world three catchers on Opening Day won’t happen, but it’s the Twins and who knows what will actually happen.
  • The Opening Day centerfielder job is now a two-man race with the Mastroianni reassignment. Alex Presley and Aaron Hicks will fight it out in the next two weeks to see who gets the nod in Chicago on March 31.
