Twins Cut Benson, Two Others

The Twins announced this morning that they have cut outfielder Joe Benson and pitchers Pedro Hernandez and Luis Perdomo. That leaves 38 players in camp heading into the final week of spring training.

Benson came into camp competing for the starting center field job, but struggled in the field and at the plate, hitting just .151 this spring. He showed flashes of the tools that made him a top prospect, but was unable to shake off the rust following a lost 2012.

Hernandez came over in the Francisco Liriano trade last year. He pitched well this spring, throwing 11 innings while striking out six and walking one, without allowing a run. He will most likely begin 2013 in AAA and could be an option later in the season if other starters falter.

Perdomo pitched well this spring, too, striking out more than a batter per inning. The righty threw 17 innings for the Twins last season.
