Field’s brief stint with Twins is done

March 11, 2012; Scottsdale AZ, USA; Colorado Rockies shortstop Thomas Field (14) can

The Minnesota Twins claimed Thomas Field off waivers from the Colorado Rockies at the beginning of the month.  Less than four weeks later, the Los Angeles Angels of Aneheim claimed him from the Twins.

Field is a 25-year-old player, who has played second base, shortstop, and right field.  Having seen 18 major league games in the last two years, he probably wouldn’t make a significant impact for his major league team.  In fact, it’s reasonable to wonder if he would see any playing time above AAA.

With Field claimed and Denard Span traded to the Washington Nationals, the Twins roster sits at 38.  Could the Twins fill the two open spots with signing at the December 3-6 Winter Meetings or the December 6 Rule 5 Draft?

Picture the Twins doing a Rule 5. Also picture them grabbing a couple of minor league guys. Or, they might do two…but can’t see them burying an infielder or outfielder on the roster all year. Could see them doing a Santana…a long relief guy who might start in a year or two…but that would make Swarzak expendable. Hopefully we are close to hearing about a couple of free agent signings (I vote Myers and either McCarthy or Blanton).

A couple of days ago, I’d have scoffed if you said “free agent signing”; TR has seemed to indicate they didn’t have the $. Post-Span trade, I’ve heard he’s got more agent meetings scheduled then GM meetings during the Winter meetings. Change of plans? We’ll know soon!
