I'd take a $26.3 million season. Hey, I'd even take a $20 million value season from Mauer.

When you sign a free agent to a long term deal, you're almost always paying for past performance, and Mauer is no exception. His five great seasons from 2005 through 2009 are what made him a $23 million/year player. It's messed up, but it's the way the market works.

I guarantee you that the Angels aren't going to get $250 million worth of value from Albert Pujols, either. But that's what happens when the system pays guys for what they've already done instead of what they're capable of doing.
