I totally agree with that proposal and it was roughly what I had in my head when I heard of their signing of Doumit. There is one wrinkle to it however, Doumit cannot play that many games at first base. He is awful there, too much of a liability. Better to put him in RF. This doesn’t mean the same type of allotment of games-played at the various positions cannot take place however. It’s just that you have to have Trevor Plouffe play first base for the games that you have allotted Doumit to play 1B and then put Doumit in RF for those games instead. When Morneau plays 1B and Doumit DH’s Plouffe goes to RF (one could replace Plouffe with Parmelee here if that suits their offseason fantasies better). Doumit did not play 1B at all last year for a reason.

Tricky, tricky, tricky, Mr. Gilmore. I thought I was going to have to bash you for dragging Wilson Ramos back into things, but you didn’t even bash the Capps/Ramos trade, and that alone wins you serious bonus points in my book.

Now, complicating matters is if you think his OPS decreases the more he catches. It probably does – question is how much. Makes for a judgement call whether you gain more with better offensive production from Mauer at another position and accepting worse defensive production from Doumit or (much) worse offensive production from Butera or someone similar to him at catcher. If he’s a consistent OPS 1.000 as a first baseman or DH, it gets interesting; if he does that as a RF, it’s really nice. But if you stick him at one of those spots and he hits only like in 2007. 2008, or 2010, then you’ve become somewhat ordinary at two positions, catcher and the one Mauer is at. Even at those levels, he’s an upgrade in RF over Cuddyer, but at the cost of a downgrade at catcher; close to a wash.
