Joe, I read your article at CttP, and it was pretty good. I'll make sure to put a link to it in an upcoming post. I largely agree with your assessment of this move. Doumit should be worth somewhere near 1.5 WAR. Since Drew Butera was an astounding -0.8 WAR last year (accdg. to Fangraphs), this is a gain for the Twins of about 2.3 WAR. That certain Japanese shortstop, by the way, had a WAR of -1.4. I think it would be pretty much impossible for Doumit to do worse than that!

As for Willingham, I think he'd be an interesting player for the Twins, but he'd probably be more expensive than Kubel. If the Twins are really only going to have a $100 million payroll, that means they've got about $12 million to spend. Willingham would eat up a large chunk of that money, and they'd have nothing left to spend on a starting pitcher (which in my opinion, they need much more than an outfielder).

Thome is not ranked, so the Twins didn't offer him arbitration, but Kubel is indeed Class B and Cuddyer is Class A. The Twins would end up with three extra high draft picks if both leave. I think there's about a 75% chance that both will.

I wrote up an article about the Doumit signing on Call to the Pen; I'd appreciate it if you checked it out. 3 million is basically nothing, and it's actually the same amount of money that a certain Japanese shortstop makes. The Twins are set to get some compensatory picks with the departures of Jason Kubel and Michael Cuddyer, the latter is set to become overpaid. Oh yeah, Jim Thome is also a Type B free agent (I think, correct me if I'm wrong). I am hearing that the Twins are very interesting in Josh Willingham and are about to sign him, and Willingham is surely an upgrade over Kubel and probably over Cuddyer. I would be interested in hearing your thoughts as a specialist in all things Twins- and more.
