I think the Twins might not win another AL Central crown for 4 years. I offer no defense of that analysis.

The $100 million figure came out in the press conference where Ryan was introduced as returning to the GM position. A later interview with Twins' President, Dave St. Peter was a bit more promising when he said that he and Ryan had not discussed the 2012 payroll at all yet. He further went on to say something to the effect that they would spend what was needed to compete. My guess (maybe just a hope?) is the opening day payroll will be closer the $110 million than $100 million.

The 100million payroll seems dangerous to me. Just as I was starting to get used to the front office spending the big bucks now the carrot is being pulled away! I think the Twins will compete this year, and I think that although we won't be crazy spenders, even w/ 18mil of spending room we can put a division contender on the field... and leave some room financially to pick up an arm or a bat, or both if the Twins are competing near the trade deadline next summer. Wishful thinking!
