A couple years ago I wrote a post saying Joe Mauer has a chance to be the best catcher of all time. It doesn’t look like he’ll get there now, but I think he will end up a top 5 catcher fairly easily and could be as good as #2 ever. Not bad for a guy that most people thought would be worse than Mark Prior.
Looking at a straight WAR Graph, Mauer doesn’t quite stack up to the other three:
But if you look at it in terms of how many WAR they have accrued by a certain age, Mauer looks like he will pass Ivan Rodriguez given that Mauer is a much better hitter than Pudge was (though fWAR doesn’t measure catcher defense and, as much as I love Mauer back there, there is no doubt Pudge is better).
