Oh, I didn't mean to make it sound like poor umpiring was costing the Twins the series; I was trying to point out that the umpiring in general has been pretty poor, and that Hunter Wendelstedt in particular is bad at his job. The Twins have also had a couple of blown calls go their way, so it isn't as though there is some sort of conspiracy against them or anything. I just don't think there is any excuse to get the calls so completely wrong, especially in the postseason. Umpires are human and they make mistakes just like everyone else, but, unlike the rest of us, they are never held accountable. I think that is the real problem.

Good article today from Yahoo's Jeff Passan: http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=AiKKTH0kSJYq6P9i5I6FHVE5nYcB?slug=jp-twinsyankeesumpires100710

Studies have shown that strike zones shrink in counts that favor pitchers and expand in counts that favor hitters so it isn't particularly surprising that Pavano was squeezed on the 2-2 pitch in question.

It is something to talk about but the Twins can't cry foul over it too much. From Passan's article: "And 17 times – most of them actually benefitting Pavano – Wendelstedt called a strike on a pitch outside the zone."
